About Dr. Greg Cheney
My goal is to help you take valiant steps toward renewal in your life and in your most important relationships. My hope is to help you do this with my 24 years of experience in helping others as a pastoral counselor, marriage counselor, and couples therapist. I combine this experience with scientifically--validated approaches to helping people change and heal. The main approach I use is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). I am an ICEEFT certified EFT trainer, supervisor, and therapist.
My top priority is to help you experience life through authentic and connected relationships. I look forward to learning about your goals for marriage counseling and couples therapy.
Helping others improve their lives has always been a focus of mine. I was drawn to helping others even before my formal training as a pastor, Army Chaplain, and therapist. Those experiences before my formal training are what moved me toward serving others. Experiences serving in the inner city and in other countries were catalysts that set the rest of my life in motion. Spending time in Los Angeles, New York City, New Mexico, Mexico, and Chile changed my life. I discovered a passion for serving individuals, couples, and families. This passion led me to specialize in marriage counseling and couples therapy. I dedicated myself to obtaining advanced certifications and specialities in the field. My hope is to use my background and skills to help create a life-changing experience in marriage counseling and couples therapy.
I'm a Northern California native from the Sierra Nevada Mountains with a love for the outdoors and adventure. The high Sierra, mountain air and cold mountain streams still seem to call to me even though I haven't lived there for over sixteen years. I still love to get out into the high sierra backcountry and wish I had more opportunities to travel out west to do so. Some of my favorites memories are backpacking in the Tahoe and Lakes Basin areas of Northern California.
I landed in North Carolina with this love for the outdoors. I quickly fell in love with the mountain, piedmont, and coastal regions of the state. I am still amazed that in a few hours I can be on an adventure in any one of those areas enjoying what each location has to offer. I thank the Army for bringing me to a state that I would never have considered living in. Circumstances in life can offer pleasant surprises that we may never have thought to explore. Moving to North Carolina 18 years ago was one of those surprises.
When I'm not working with others you can find me exploring new hobbies and working to stay connected with my three adult children. One of my favorite ways to relax is spending time with my wife of 26 years as we experiment with Bee Keeping and raising chickens.
