Dr. Greg Cheney, LMFT was a guest on the We Heart Therapy podcast discussing what makes Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) so effective with the military, veteran, and first responder communities. He also shares his background, what led him to become a Marriage and Family Therapist, and why he specializes in EFT.
Working with military populations using Emotionally Focused Therapy leverages the bonds forged in the most intense of circumstances within the military to help service members experience their most important relationships in deep and meaningful ways. Service in the military is wrought with barriers to close relationships at home. At the height of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan time away from home was a regular experience. Seperation from loved ones for months to a year at a time are common. Train ups for deployments, and then the deployments themselves, keep loved ones apart. Long deployments are not as frequent any more. But, field time and long work hours continue to make the military lifestyle stressful.
To make it through a stressful military career families develop ways to manage. One way many manage is by focusing on the tasks of daily living and minimizing emotions. This can be necessary during times of military separation. It can become difficult to emotionally connect after this separation. With frequent separations marriages and families can struggle.
Emotionally Focused Therapy assists military service members and their families experience closer relationships. Couples and families learn to connect with the emotions they had to ignore. Once connected with these emotions they then share them with their loved one. Military couples and families learn to connect with their emotions when together. They are also encouraged to find a way to connect when their military service separates them. The end result is a marriage and family that can focus on the tasks of daily living when needed. But, it is also a marriage and family that can now emotionally connect as well. They need both to make it through a challenging career of military service.
